It so isn’t about you!
Life has its ups and downs and twists and turns. It carries us along, lips us upside down and throws us around. For the most part, we enjoy the ride.
For the times that we don’t, we crawl into our shells. We drop back into old habits and patterns of behaviour. Life becomes about us, and we get defensive and protective. We react. We forget the big picture and we become our problems.
I remember listening to someone speak at a business networking event a few years ago, and she used the example of having our head in a black bin bag. Not only do we wear our problem; at some point, we are the problem. The problem is no longer just a problem, it becomes our identity. Some of us hide how we are feeling. Some self-medicate with food, drink, drugs. Others talk about it to the anyone willing to listen, and some even create bigger, more elaborate stories about the problem.
What we need to realise is that at some point, we need to own it; know that we have a hand in the situation and get over ourselves. Only through this will we be able to truly let go and move on.
In order to own it, we need to allow ourselves to feel whatever we feel; anger, grief, hurt. We need to embrace all sides of the story, including our part. Reflect and learn from what has happened. As Jim Rohn said, “For things to get better, you have to get better.”
Then, stop it! Get over yourself.
It’s so not about you! Stop the self-medicating. Stop the posting on social media. Stop talking about it. Most of the people listening, are not really listening; they have their own problems to deal with. And besides, I am pretty sure that whatever you are going through right now, someone else is worse off than you.
Just stop it.
And, move on.
Till next time …
